Double meaning

Today's "word of the day" from the Free Word Centre in Farringdon.

Interesting how a word describing qualities of strength in a woman also has a derogatory meaning. It reminded me of this article which includes examples of 8 words to describe a woman which once had positive or neutral meanings but the meaning has now completely changed.

Looking up a couple of online dictionaries for 'virago', it seems this is also the case here - the definition that includes strength and courage is described as 'archaic'.
