Saying goodbye

Denis Moss was the father of one of my closest friends. Today, we had to say Goodbye to him for the last time. He was loved by everyone for his mischievous sense of humour and his telling of tall tales. He would greet new people with "Have I met you before? I seem to remember you coming up before me when I was on the Magistrates bench" - he never had been a JP. Or relating how, as a child, the family were so poor that his mother would hang a rasher of bacon over the door and they would all have to jump up to get a lick on their way to school - also not true! Some of his wilder stories were true, such as transporting a horse that he had found ( all the locals had evacuated the area, leaving many of their animals behind)  around in Italy in WWII  on a low loader and collecting extra rations from the US Army Quartermaster, by creating fictitional members of his unit, in order to feed a growing band of stray dogs that he was collecting. It was always a challenge to work out which stories were true and which were just a big tease.
Needless to say, he is going to be very much missed
