Squinting Into The Sun

Seeing them squinting
into the sun
(drained faces overexposed)
I reflect upon
how an unfortunate few
(but not, I’m convinced, these two)
appear unable to connect to anyone.

Most of us have a special loved one,
and family, and friends,
and acquaintances to nod to.

And then I think of Anne
who lives alone,
has no TV and doesn’t read,
whose money’s tight
and whose family, she says,
is in a far off place.

They never meet.

We chat with her
when we can.

Sometimes we see her
looking disconnected
in the street.
