Wooden people

Milton Keynes is famous for its concrete cows, but less so for its wooden people. I took a slight detour on my way home this evening to avoid a traffic snarl up and was reminded of these two bizarre figures on top of a roundabout close to the OU campus. They may well have a particular significance, but I can't find out what this might be. However, I have discovered that they were carved by Milton Keynes sculptor Robert Koenig out of an old local cedar tree.
