The Scottish Thistle

Legend has it that during an invasion by an army of Norsemen, one barefoot warrior happened to step on a thistle causing him to cry out in pain thus alerting the Scots. This was believed to be at the Battle of Largs in 1263. As to which species of thistle was responsible is debateable, but the Scots then adopted the thistle as their emblem and flower of Scotland.
