Wieliczka Salt mines

The Blurb: Opened in the 13th century, the mine produced table salt continuously until 2007, as one of the world's oldest salt mines in operation. Commercial mining was discontinued in 1996 due to low salt prices and mine flooding.

The tour takes approx. 2 -3 hours as you wonder down 50 flights of narrow stair case, I had a sudden thought that this could be quite claustrophobic, but thankfully it opened up into a massive chambers.
64 feet is where you start as you get taken through many of corridors and many 100's of feet lower but you only ever get to see 1% of the mine itself ..

Its an amazing place, the people that worked down there created masterpieces from religious icons, national figures and the famous Salt Cathedral where this beautiful chandelier was hanging.  Yes even this was made of salt (melted down and purified to be made clear)

Just stunning ... unfortunately I couldn't fit it in my hand luggage!
