Work in Progress

Yesterday afternoon a bike ride was planned but when I picked up my helmet, I saw a mason bee had started making a nest in it and as I didn't want to disturb her, the bike ride was postponed. A new helmet had been on the shopping list for a while and one was purchased today.
The mason bee is a black, nectar feeding, N.Z. native insect about 16mm long. The female finds a suitable crevice and constructs a nest made from mud.  She 'sings' while she works - a pleasant humming sound. An egg is laid in each cell and a paralysed spider (usually an orb web) is deposited for the larva to feed on when it emerges from the egg.
