First introduced by inventor Sylvan Goldman, owner of the Humpty Dumpty supermarket chain in Oklahoma, in 1937 and designed to be 'nesting' by Orla Watson in 1946 imagine schlepping around the aisles without it.
Now with coffee cup holders and baguette and flower holding rings as part of the design they just get fancier every year...and at between $75 and $400 a pop no wonder there's a hot line to report a stray away from the herd.
