Northern Flicker

We visited the Rail Trail at Station road in Amherst this morning for the first time this spring.  There were birds around, although not a wide variety of species. Robins were the most numerous, and this Northern Flicker was the loudest, calling nearly continuously for at least ten minutes, just above us. It's spreading its wing to show off its yellow shafts (the western subspecies has red shafts--you'll find a vivid example  on the California gallery of my new web site).
