ANZAC Day

Anzac Day occurs on 25 April. It commemorates all New Zealanders killed in war and also honours returned servicemen and women.
The date itself marks the anniversary of the landing of New Zealand and Australian soldiers – the Anzacs – on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915. The aim was to capture the Dardanelles, the gateway to the Bosphorus and the Black Sea. At the end of the campaign, Gallipoli was still held by its Turkish defenders. Thousands lost their lives on both sides

Death came much too young
In a distant land.
All those brave young men
Made their final stand.
Onwards into danger
Never asking why.
Daring, brave and ours,
Soldiers went to die.

After the commemorative service this morning I visited the memorial. These crosses are set out each year,  "Lest we forget".

Diamond is the Mono Monday theme for this week. The crosses were set out in a half diamond shape (which is a bit grasping at straws.) If you look closely at the poem, you will see that the initial letter of each line spells 'diamonds'. That might get me entry to the mono Monday challenge.  :-))
