Yuki No Otani (The Ice Walls)

Aim - The Girl Who Fell Through the Ice ft. Kate Rogers

Today was spent going to Tateyama and doing the Tateyama Kurobe Alpen Routel. This trail goes along the mountains and through the highest point in the area. It's beautiful and famous for the incredible amounts of snow that fall throughout the year. What you see here are the ice walls which on average are about 20 meters most years. This year was 13 meters which was still huge. The landscape was beautiful and the sun was gorgeous. We made it to Kurobe Dam which is also spectacular. Get to Tateyama in Toyama prefecture to see this amazing feature. It's about 2 hours or so from Kanazawa and a must in Japan. Gorgeous.

My friend and I missed the last carriage back to Tateyama but thankfully, perhaps due to the massive amounts of tourists, there were extra buses and ropeway services otherwise we would have had to spend the night in the snow... which would have been pretty awesome anyway.

Some extra information about it on the Official Tourist Site. Here's a blog entry that may also prove helpful.
