To See New Englandly

Wattle & Snood

I spotted this this cocky dinner-table dodger running wild in someone's garden, acting as though he didn't have a care in the world. He may have been spared the axe last week, but little does he know he has only another three weeks until his number may be up.

Although "Wattle & Snood" may sound like a Dickensian accounting firm, a wattle and snood is what makes the turkey a turkey. The wattle is that fleshy ruffle under its beak and on its neck; the snood is that attractive bit of flesh that hangs over the top of its beak and waggles about wildly when it gobbles.

Here he is in his full-feathered glory.
