Daliás, Alpujarra

Out and About in Almeria No 8.

A warm start to the day with a stiff breeze.

This morning a short car ride to Daliás situated at the foothill of the Alpujarra, Sierra Gador.

A large village with winding streets, squares and a long climb from the south of the village to the Church and beyond.   The main Blip is of the clock tower of the Town Hall which is behind the Plaza showing the Sierra in low cloud.

Extras include the Church of Santa Maria de Ambrox which is large for the size of the village.   It was erected in the 16th Century and has had a chequered life - being extensively damaged in the Morisco Rebellion in the Alpujarras in 1568.   An earthquake then completely destroyed it in 1804 and in 1993 a fire caused serious damage.   Possible from the Fiesta to honor el Cristo de la Luz where Christ is carried out from the church and thousands of rockets are lit and all the people stand with their hands in the air to God.   See Statue in extras.

We went to the Fiesta some years ago and it was the scariest thing I have ever seen.   All the rockets going straight up (some 1 metre in length) and of course coming straight back down.   On this occasion Al one cut Al on the head and he had to have stitches!   And the debris - it was just like ash from a volcano.

Famous people from Daliás include José Maria Rubio, (1864 - 1929) the first and only Saint born in Almeria.
Juan Callejón Villegas a 19th century diplomat - the gr, gr, grandfather of Helena Bonham Carter!
