The KING ALFRED pub, Hyde, Winchester

Built by the Winchester Brewery Company Ltd in 1898 and given an appropriate name as the thousandth anniversary of the death of King Alfred (in 899) was to be celebrated in the coming year.  A delightful, roomy pub with an unexpectedly large garden behind.  Ten minutes walk northwards from Winchester city centre.

Pubs rarely feature in my photos, but this exception is a personal one: my great-grandfather was landlord of the pub from 1916 until his death four years later; his widow continued there as landlord for a further twelve years.
