Village Elder

A small Tonkonan mountain village in Toraja , Sulawesi, Indonesia. This elderly fellow was happy to show us the graves of the village ancestors carved in the stone walls or in small Tonkonnen tombs. The crevices in the walls also contained remains bundled in cloths whist small children and babies are buried among the roots of the Banyan tree. The whole area is dotted with graves after elaborate funeral ceremonies that last for days.
