Aitken Memorial Fountain, Govan Cross

Went to Govan Market this afternoon but too late - the stalls were just closing. My attention was taken by the Memorial Fountain that had been newly painted and looked very vibrant. The Fountain was erected in 1884 to commemorate the work of Dr John Aitken (1838-1880) within the community.  He was born in Govan, the son of a spirit merchant. He became a Licentiate of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons at age 21. On graduating he set up in general practice in Govan, and provided medical care to the workers of the nearby Ibrox and Drumoyne collieries. In 1864 he was appointed Police Surgeon and Medical Officer to the Burgh. His death at the age of 41 was widely mourned and was attributed by some as being the result of overwork and his total devotion to the needs of the poor. I think he would be pleased to see the Memorial still existing in its vibrant state.
