may (blossom)

"Ne'er cast a clout till may be out"

An English proverb: "clout" means clothing, "may" means either the month of may or the blossom of the hawthorn, as you wish.  In any event it is a warning not to discard your winter clothes too early!

The hawthorn (crataegus monogyna) is also called whitethorn and may-tree.  (However, you should not translate the may-tree literally into German or you will be faced with a maypole.)

This photo was taken in Pope's Meadow in Binfield, Buckinghamshire - so-named because it is adjacent to the home of the young Alexander Pope, a poet and satirist.of the early 18th century.
