Night Heron

At last a photograph of an adult Night Heron (a huge crop as it was far away) but a very different looking bird in adult form to the one I took flying. It's not the most detailed but you can just see in the branches this bird has head steamers, so I think it is a male. Those red/orange eyes are a very distinctive feature and are obviously an aid for this birds night vision, as it prefers to feed usually at dusk and in very low light. What this bird is doing out in the heat of the day and in full sun is anyone's guess, unless he is trying to impress a female, or perhaps on the look out for frogs and insects after an unsuccesful hunt the night before. They usually spend the day well hidden away in the shade.
