Hill End Garden of Rest

I noticed this new sign along the Alban Way on my run today. The garden has always been there, but had become rather overgrown and as I passed I noticed that there was also someone working to get it looking beautiful again. It was the burial ground for patients and staff of the nearby Hill End and Cell Barnes Lane mental hospitals. A sign in the garden relates how patients were only entitled to a pauper burial, and were therefore laid to rest in mass graves without a headstone. Different times, sadly.
