Was It Really So Long Ago

A Weekend Away

I recently bought an old frame tent for the Jolly Boys Outing mess tent (see 12th May), the ex-army field tent whilst more than capable was very large and heavy, so a replacement had been obtained.

On arriving home from school, we told the girls that Daddy had bought another tent and that we'd have to drive to Norfolk to collect it.

'What? Another one?' quizzed Miss C. Yes, yes, but we'll have a meal out in the evening by way of recompense for you all having to spend your Friday evening in the car.

A little over 2 hours later, we arrived at our destination. We'd apologised to the girls, promising to be as quick as possible with the tent seller so that we could get to dinner soon. As we drove along the gravel track, towards the buildings at the end, Miss I observed that they look like the ones we'd been on holiday to with Nan a few years ago. "I know they can't be she said, "but they do look like it".

"Girls!" said I, "It's time to come clean. We aren't going to be buying a tent this evening. But we are going to spend the weekend away for Mummy's birthday."

"REALLY?" Said Miss C excitedly

"YES, really" I confirmed

"Oh thank you!!!"

Beloved and I had shopped and packed the car during the day with all things needed for the few days away, then concealed it all in the car boot, covered by a large stripey blanket. No one was any the wiser.

Dinner in East Barn, Toftrees consisted mostly of pizza for speed and ease. Master H had waited very patiently indeed for his meal. A good omen for the weekend perhaps!
