Ring of Brodgar

A wonderfully full day on Orkney today, our cottage is very close to the Ness of Brodgar so we set off early to take in a few of the sites. First the Stones of Stenness, so tall and striking in this beautiful low lying landscape. Then a walk to the Ring of Brodgar, I was again in awe at the scale of this monument.
Coffee and cake was much needed before a stroll along the mile long street in Stromness. I loved the way the gable ends of the houses faced into the street with an alley way going down to the water, all these houses had there own slipway to the sea.
We walked along the coast at Yesnaby and spotted the rare Scottish Primula and carpets of Blue Squill and Primroses. Eider ducks searched for food amongst the seaweed and sea birds like Arctic Turns and Fulmars flew overhead. We managed to miss lunch so an early supper was enjoyed back in Stromness. That could easily have been enough for one day but it was such an amazing evening that we returned to the stones which we had to ourselves. The evening light was divine.
Lots of blips to catch up on including my time in Edinburgh and the Isle of Arran with ED but too tired now!!
