En Camino

While I was in St. Michael's Church, Rathbarry (near Clonakilty), today, at a funeral, I couldn't help but notice that one stained-glass window had this illustration of a shell in it. But then I remembered that the parish (and their GAA club) is dedicated to St.James.
In the middle ages, the Ardfield / Rathbarry area was one of the assembling points for people about to embark on a ship heading to Spain where they would follow the Camino de Santiago or the Way of St. James.
To this day, the scallop shell denotes both a person who is making the pilgrimage and the route along which the pilgrims walk.
(The Rathbarry church dates from 1828 but I don't know how old the stained-glass is.)
