Spotlight on The Royal Hall - Harrogate

Harrogate's Royal Hall was originally opened in 1903. Originally named the Kursaal, it was renamed the Royal Hall in 1914 when all things German became unacceptable due to the Great War.
Renowned theatre designer Frank Matcham designed the interior which is full of lavish decoration, ornate plasterwork and an abundance of gold leaf. It fell into serious disrepair in 2002 and had to be closed to the public for safety reasons. The council wanted to demolish it at the time, but thankfully a huge fundraising operation took place, and following extensive restoration, it was reopened in 2008 by HRH Prince of Wales.
It is in regular use today, hosting music concerts, comedy appearances as well as hosting various amateur productions.

You can see from the extras why it is referred to as 'The jewel in Harrogate's crown.'
