Breaking Up

I wonder, now,
if any friends were tempted to interfere
when they saw cracks appear.

And when the rifts did begin to show
I didn’t realise they were quite so
visible to the outside eye
and was surprised that no one
was astounded when I explained
that things were going wrong.
‘We know,’ they said. ‘We know.’

It must have been that gap between us.
The way we sat, not speaking.
The short sharp sentences if we did.
The brief replies. The curt responses.

Dead giveaways now I come
to think about it.

When you’re in hate
it’s hard to hide it.
