St Catherine's Island

At low tide you can reach the Fort on foot - just a couple of wet toes!
The Fort was built in the 1800s to protect the town against the French who never came. It became a refined home in the early 1900s until 1940. Then .became a zoo in the 1950's until 1980s - all sort of animals were to be seen - snakes, otters, monkeys and lots more. It is now a visitors centre with special events including a masked ball & carol concert at Christmas. Everything now depends on the tide, great open fires provide warmth for the festivities.
