A Meandering Life...

1000 years ago Edmund Ironside (aka Edmund II) had a bit of a tiff with the Danes that became known as the Battle of Otford. As it was Otford's village fair today they asked some of the Saxons and Vikings to come back.

They brought with them some of their Arts & crafts. My main image is of a antler handled dagger. The pattern is coloured black by filling in the carving with ash mixed with bee's wax.

To fix the blade into the antler he soaked the antler in water for a month. This made the inside soft. Pushing the blade in then made it impossible to remove.

Extras:

The lady was making a Nalbinding hat. She prefers crochet but they hadn't invented glasses by 1016 so couldn't do it.

Finally the Viking welcoming party showed their displeasure at my presence totally unaware that the local Saxon was just about to test the quality of their hats...

All images were taken using my Samsung S7 without any cropping/processing.
