By Himself

Grain earth house

This is a deep souterain in the most unlikely setting in the midst of an industrial estate on the outskirts of Kirkwall. The key has to be obtained from Judith Glue's shop to unlock the enclosure and door to the steps down. A torch is provided. The steps lead to a long, low, curved passage ending in a chamber supported by stone pillars. It is damp and deathly cold. We crouched along the passage hoping the torch would last and didn't stay long in the creepy gloom.
'Storage' is often suggested as a purpose for souterains - dairy and possibly meat might be feasible but definitely nothing prone to damp.
It has been our first wet day here on Orkney - we have been so lucky.
I did some drawing in Corrigall museum. A party arrived before I could paint, so I may complete it later this evening from memory. I will add two in the extras because the in situ photo is not sharp.
