Changing Room

It didn't have rows of individual incandescent bulbs around the mirrors, but there were lots of mirrors, and it was crowded with dancers tearing off street clothes for costumes. Crowded in with excited women, we soon found ourselves at the edge of the stage. Suddenly it was our turn, and just as suddenly, it was over: our three-minute number was a flash of bright lights, a sense of moving in a most automatic but surreal way, irresistible grinning, and astonishment that you can pull out of missteps and keep a smile on your face. I'm signing up for another round of tap dance lessons in the fall!
