Rose-breasted Grosbeak

While spouse had a dental appointment near where we used to live, birded for an hour at Hidden Lake Forest Preserve in Downers Grove, Illinois. There were enough good photos today for weeks of blipping (although I won't do that). Part of this forest preserve's boundary is with the Morton Arboretum, and as a result the wooded portion of the preserve is loaded with birds.

Selected a bird I have not blipped before, a male rose-breasted grosbeak. Grosbeaks have a large conical bill, and the term literally means a large beak.

20+ years ago my son and I used to hike and fish here. It's much more developed now, with a limestone path around both lakes, paved drive, parking lots, and nice restrooms.
