Looking towards Blencathra from Bowscale fell

Hugely improved by viewing large on black

A four - Wainwright day. Took in Souther Fell, Mungrisedale Common, Rannerdale Crags and Bowscale Fell. Not the most exciting of fells, but a good one to get done after a long dry spell, as most of the walk to Mundrisedale Common was over Sphagnum moss, and I'd imagine for most of the year it would just be a quagmire. Wainwright himself described Mungrisedale common as "it's natural attractions are of a type that appeals only to sheep. There is little on these extensive grass slopes to provide even a passing interest for an ordinary walker" A dreary walk was ended happily at Bowscale Fell, which as well as the view above, also offered a bird's eye view of Bowscale tarn.

Having taken my Wainwright Tally to 166, I tried to celebrate with a pint at the Old Crown at Hesket Newmarket, but it was closed - so I had a cuppa at home.

The extra shows the route followed on the OS map.
