Juneteenth--Black 4th of July

Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas in June 1865. Our local annual celebration featured gospel music, a marching band, art exhibits, performance artists, information booths, speakers, a basketball contest and barbecue!  The ribs were falling-off-the-bone good, the perfect counterpoint to my earlier breakfast of fresh fruit, quinoa and sprouted almonds. A day spent hanging out in the park, enjoying the fine weather and upbeat atmosphere.  We generally don't Do Nothing--it felt like a vacation day. The best part is that we could walk there; traffic here is a nightmare with various graduations, college move-out and summer tourists. Main routes are jammed, and every clever shortcut is worse. We have resolved to have our weekend fun on foot!
