the post box

the main blip is a replica Victorian post box erected to commemorate the 1853 installation of Britain's first roadside box in Carlisle
xtra - genuine Victorian wall box from rural Perthshire installed in the paddle steamer Waverley allowing passengers to post cards and letters on board and receive a special Waverley cachet. This commemorates the fact that many early Clyde steamers were RMS (Royal Mail Steamer) which meant they were allowed to have a post office on board and mail could be picked up from and delivered to the many remote villages and towns visited by the steamers on their routes.
New methods of communication mean that far fewer letters and postcards are posted in these red boxes than in the past
