Damsel In Distress

After a swim this morning, we cycled out to Ham Wall Nature Reserve this afternoon for the first time in a while.

While we were sitting in one of the hides, I spotted this damsel fly (I think) trying to extricate itself from a spider's web.

It succeeded eventually and here it is recovering its strength before flying off. Not the sharpest shot, I know, but it records the small dramas that go on all the time in the natural world, often without us noticing.

We were lucky a few minutes later to see a pair of bitterns wheeling then landing in the reed beds, but sadly too far away to get a clear shot.
