The Doodlebug and the dogboy

"...We used to know when a V1 (doodlebug- rocket bomb) was on it's way , before we heard it, because Laddie (dog) would go and lie under the table and start shaking.
I'd go and lie next to him and put my hand on his head and as the noise grew and the bomb got closer his shivering grew, more and more until the engine on the V1 cut and then he'd go rigid, all the time I had my hand on his head, because when the blast came he'd always jump so far as to hit his head on the underside of the table."
