Il Castello di Padenghe by night

The Castle of Padenghe sul Garda is a former stronghold dating from the twelfth century of Padenghe sul Garda, in the province of Brescia.

The structure, with a square plan tower defense high 20 m., stands on a hill that overlooks the town. Inside the walls, which are accessed through an arched portal with drawbridge, they are placed some dwellings divided by two roads.

The castle, attested as existing in 1145, was probably built on the ruins of a previous era building (X century). The building was recognized in 1154 among the assets granted by the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa to the bishop of Verona Theobald. The castle has always been the subject of disputes between Brescia and Verona until 1328, when it was in possession of the Scala. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries it was contended by the Republic of Venice and the Duchy of Milan. The castle remained in the possession of the Venetians from 1520 to 1796. In the following years it was filled in the moat to the castle defense.

In the sixties, the complex has undergone a major renovation with the consolidation of the perimeter walls.

Not far from the castle is the Church of St. Emiliano, the twelfth century.
