Snippets of Life

Having gone to bed at half 1 we woke up at half 6 and cycled of in a rush to make a half 7 train!! Went to Dorking and wandered for a couple of miles up to part the box hill circuit of the Olympic men's road race. We found us a good spot on the outside of a bend sitting on a crash barrier and there we waited patiently a couple of hours for the race to reach us.

And they came, police motorbikes and vans and official cars first and then the first cyclists and five minutes later (to start with) the whole pack flew passed with a rush of wind, words can't quite adequately describe it, and then the 30 odd BMW team cars whizzed passed with spare wheels and bikes on the roof (and a kangaroo on the Australians roof!) . And then we'd wait for about 15 minutes, cheering on the odd stragglers here and there before the whole lot came round again!

Eight times this happened, this was the last time when we'd walked up towards Leatherhead a little way. I was crouched down right on the kerb as i took this and half a second later had to sit back save my nose being sliced off as the 100 cyclists hurtled passed barely a foot from my face!

We glimpsed them again from the midst of the crowds as they headed back towards London through Leatherhead and then made our long trek on to the crowded station where i fell asleep sitting on the floor and then again on the train where i dreamt hectic dreams about hospitals!

But what a day! Well worth it, and for free! We wish it happened every year..
