TRACTOR TUESDAY - BORISMOBILE

Every time I switch on Sky News, seem to see a photo or video of Boris sitting behind the wheel of a JCB, either at the factory or at a Digger Rental company who are clearly really peeved that the mainland European rental enquiries have been so few in the last 40 odd years. Perhaps they need to include a French translation on their website. Or was it that someone with a Polish accent rented a machine and never returned it? Dreadful what these foreigners do – never had a Brit do anything like it- littering and stealing – No …not the natives.

Our local farmers cooperative run 6 tractors. Originally three Mercedes Unimogs but now year for year they have been buying JCBs and now run three of them. I popped into the offices at lunchtime to ask for their thoughts on the referendum.

The same story: "It’s a joke isn’t it? The Brits!"

I then explained there is a Lord on the island who is recommending the employees of JCB  vote “Leave” and happens to be the same undemocratically elected Lord who is involved in making the laws of the UK.

Having all been on a JCBs works visit last year, they all knew the name of this Lord but simply would not believe what I told them. They had a great time on the factory tour and were very impressed by the friendly hospitality.

I am afraid my efforts at saying the mad hatter Lord had probably thought he could save money by not exporting to Europe and thus save the enormous costs of having the tractors adapted to driving on the wrong side of the road, didn’t impress them.

All joking aside, they could not think that they would be buying JCBs in the future if the UK leaves the UK. Their tractors are in use 24 hours a day during the season and any downtime is critical. Spare parts have to be available quickly and without problems and all the licensing and health and safety issues need to continue to be on EU conditions. Maybe Mercedes will make a good offer for Unimogs to replace the JCBs.

ps The Germans were thrilled Northern Ireland made it through to the next round. The fans could possibly take over from the fans of the Republic of Ireland who have been the German's favourites for at least the last 10 years..
