The 'South Chapel's' Birthday

I managed to get to the city today - something which is sadly becoming more infrequent. I caught up with friends and managed a stroll through the centre centre and noted how it keeps changing in shape.
As I walked past St. Finbarr's Church in Dunbar Street, I noticed that it's celebrating a milestone in September. It is 250 years old. It's known locally simply as the "south chapel" (the Cathedral on top of Shandon St. being the "north chapel").
It holds many historical links and artefacts but by far its most exquisite is the marble sculpture of "The Dead Christ" by John Hogan which lays embedded in the altar. The Waterford native executed this work in 1833 from one block of Carrara marble. (See my pic in extras.) If you haven't seen this, and if you can, it is well worth a visit — if only to admire this extraordinary work of art.
