Lincoln Cathedral

We took a long trip north from London to Lincoln, nearly three hours with a change of trains; the second long leg was in a one-car shuttle with a deafening whistle which the engineer  happily unloosed seemingly at every crossing. But our ears survived, and I captured this view of Lincoln Cathedral through the narrow top section of the train's window  just before the station. Not great quality, but perhaps all the more romantic. Then a taxi up an incredibly steep cobblestone hill to our B&B just below the cathedral, with the driver groaning that he had to make the trip after a day with few fares. He was good-natured despite all, and we gave him a decent tip.

We arrived just in time to see Cristiano Ronaldo redeem himself* with two goals in an exciting 3-3 draw against Croatia, which enabled Portugal to squeak into the final 16 of the Euro 2016 (*he hit the post on a penalty kick in a 0-0 game 4 days ago).  Then an even more inspiring 85th minute goal (a beautiful header) for a 1-0 win by the Republic Ireland over Italy (!), to send them also into the round of 16--the best football result in their history.

Posted the next morning (on 6/23), as we keep our fingers tightly crossed that Britain votes today to Remain in Europe (it's the biggest betting event in U.K history, making the bookies sure winners).
