Love Padlocks

Love padlocks (also known as love locks and, in Taiwan, wish locks) are a custom by which padlocks are affixed to a fence, gate, bridge or similar public fixture by sweethearts to symbolise their everlasting love.

Padlocks began appearing on the fence in Boninovo in February, the month of love. Until now, around 15 padlocks with hearts and lovers initials engraved into them have been put onto the three metre-high fence. In this way, it is the lovers' intention to change the public's perception of the Boninovo area and turn it into a place of eternal love. They mainly do their work, placing the padlocks on the fence, during the night, ritually throwing the padlock keys into the sea. It is highly probable that these isolated cases will become a tradition making Boninovo a new tourist attraction.
The cliffs are a symbol of strength and persistence, and the sea has been splashing them for centuries. It is therefore not surprising to learn that local youngsters and even those from further afield have sworn their everlasting love right here in Boninovo
- according to the Dubrovnik Tourist Board.
