Dolmen

There are lots of these dolmens - neolithic burial chambers - scattered across the Coeur d'Herault region of the Languedoc. This is a particularly fine example and is beautifully situated near the spectacular Cirque de Navacelles gorge. I haven't been able to unearth a lot of information about it but in a way that doesn't matter much - I love the air of mystery. And I quite like to just imagine for myself how it was built and how the ancients gathered for the burial ceremony. Whatever their beliefs about life/death/the afterlife I'm pretty certain they had a closer relationship with nature than we moderns have. But at least you can get a sense of that from visiting this special place.
