When I arrived home last evening we headed out to vote. It didn't feel close at all, though friends in England had been more worried.

As polls closed we were being told remain had it. Commentators looked relaxed and the bookies gave odds like they'd already counted the ballots.

By the time I went to bed at 4am it was clear we were all heading for the exit.

Morning confirmed it and brought with it, at least for me, a real sense of loss.

Are we really to leave Europe?
