Hortensia / hydrangea

Last year cut the hydrangea to the ground. This was by the experts not to be a good idea, because the hydrangea blossoms according to them only on old wood.
So I would get no flowers the following year. We come this week back from vacation and what we see? The hydrangea is in full bloom.
So not everyone is knowledgeable.
