A day to remember

100 years ago today the Battle of the Somme stared - a day of exceptional horror in a terrible conflict; the British army suffered 57,470 casualties of which 19,240 were killed.

Ultimately the battle, which lasted to November, killed more than 300,000 on both sides (in nearly equal proportions)
