1st July 1916 ..... 'We will remember them'

The 1st July 2016 is the centenary of one of the bloodiest and most catastrophic days in British military history, the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

These amazing sand drawings showing the soldiers going off to war have been created by artists from Sand In Your Eye working with the young people from Waid Academy in Anstruther.

It is in the nature of these works that the tide will come in and wash them away .... a poignant reminder of how fragile life and memory are, and how valuable.

L and I cycled along to see the sand drawings just after 9 o'clock this morning but 'time and tide wait for no man' and we were just too late as the first extra shows.  The team started again about 6 o'clock this evening ..... amazing to watch them working.  The second extra is one of the Waid Academy pupils with the poppies for remembrance.
