Shrouds of the Somme

I visited the artwork '19240 Shrouds of the Somme' on display at the Northernhay Gardens in Exeter today.  This World War 1 commemoration comprises a 12 inch plastic figure in a hand stitched shroud for each named individual Allied soldier who died on the first day of the battle, one hundred years ago on the first of July.

The commemoration is a very moving experience with the names of each soldier being read out to those present.
