The Space Between Us

.....was not much when these two daddy longlegs were enjoying the sun on the wall after an amorous or purely social encounter- it was hard to tell.

........is the title of the book to be discussed at the book group this evening.

It's by Thrity Umrigar and explores the relationship between an upper-middle-class Parsi widow and her illiterate maid, in modern day India.
Although the two women share so much of their lives, the social distinction with all that entails in living conditions and education is paramount.

It bears more than a passing resemblance to the novel 'The Help' by Kathryn Stockett, about the relationship between white women and their black maids in the southern States of America in the 60's.

I have to say, well done to the girls who won the first Olympic medals for Britain: Lizzie Armistread who cycled to silver in the women's road race through torrential rain and flooded roads, and Rebecca Adlington who stormed through the last 50 metres of water to take bronze in the 400 metre freestyle swim.

At times there wasn't much to choose between the amount of water on the roads and the swimming pool.
