The Cooks on Saturday

2nd July 2016:

Not all of the 98 we support to get to Secondary school make it on Saturdays, despite the provision of transport, excellent teachers and a great meal.
We are examining the reasons and they are varied and sometimes shocking.
I suppose in almost all cases, girls have to fight to make it through Secondary where, in rural Malawi, the completion figure is less than 1%.
Our belief is that the future of the country will be determined by how well girls education is treated and at the moment, there is no need to use much of ones brain to decide that, the future is indeed bleak.
If I go father I could really get annoyed.
The pics show our staff cooking, what is considered by all, including staff to be a top class meal.
The big pot is Nsima, a maize flour where if we are using local maize might have up to 11% protein, but with the advent of GM Monsanto maize is total carbohydrate. The protein comes from tiny fish called Uisepa and the relish as they call it, is cabbage and tomato cooked in oil.
This is a 12.00 meal, but hardly any girl will have eaten since the evening before or maybe for 24 hours.
Malawi is in Faming mode since April.
