A visit today to the sumptuous National Trust property near Stockport - Lyme Park

'Here in the dining room, the table is set for dinner c.1905 - to be served à la Française with some elements of the more modish à la Russe for convenience.  The setting is deliberately old-fashioned, in keeping with the antiquarian attitudes of the 2nd Lord Newton and his wife.  The host and hostess, sitting at either end of the table, would serve the soup and the fish respectively, the plates being handed round by liveried footmen under the eye of the butler' ..................
