Packhorse Drinking Trough

Having paid a visit to Todmorden this afternoon we managed a short walk - in between showers - through the village of Mankinholes.   By the side of the road is this drinking trough which is thought to date back to the 18th century.   It comprises four linked rectangular troughs with two circular basins - one at each end.    The trough provided drinking water for livestock and packhorses whilst the two circular basins were used to keep milk churns cool.    Polly dog likes the fresh running water here and has been known to paddle in it on hot days.
